By the time you get to the essay part of the SAT, you may already be feeling the effects of essay stress as you’re in the home stretch after a long test! It’s easy to panic and write too much frantically, or to freeze and waste the short and precious time allotted for the test. Keep calm and avoid these common SAT essay mistakes:Not Answering the Question: Pick a side, prove you’re right and make your thoughts abundantly clear in your thesis. A common mistake students make is not thoroughly understanding the question asked, reflecting in their unclear answer.Spacing: Your large block of text is much harder to navigate and make sense of if it’s not spaced out properly. Make sure to structure your essay in clear intro, body, and conclusion paragraphs to help the reader understand your logic and thoughts without confusion.All evidence, no commentary: Don’t just present the facts, present your opinions on why you feel that way and how you think things could have differed. And on the contrary, don’t provide all commentary, no evidence--that’s just as bad! Don’t just tell us your opinion, have concrete evidence to back up your claims. Description and analysis go hand in hand, so be sure to include both to get the best score you can on the test!Skipping the conclusion: Make sure you take this time to wrap up your thoughts and tie everything together. An essay that ends with an analysis feels incomplete. Make sure to paraphrase your initial idea and change the structure of the sentence to avoid repeating your thesis word for word. Repeat the idea, not the words!
