• It’s OK to take your time: Some people read fast and remember everything. Others read slowly and take a couple of times to get all the information. The speed of your child’s reading doesn’t matter, as long as they are retaining the information when they are done.
• Encourage them to scan before they read: Looking at the index, table of contents and topic headers will help them navigate through what material is important for them to read and what they can skip. They don’t want to waste their time reading unnecessary information that won’t give them the answers they’re looking for.
• Optimize reading environment: Setting a comfortable and nurturing atmosphere for your child to read in will help them read at a better, undistracted pace,where they will comprehend more info.
• Focus: Since your child is reading with a purpose, it’s important for them to focus on the material. If they find themselves getting distracted or losing focus, encourage them to take a break to get back on track with a clear mind.
• Commit: Once your child starts reading, they shouldn’t stop! It’s important for them to read through each item and then they can go back and re-read pertinent sections if necessary. Continuing to read daily and practice their reading in a set routine will help them become a better reader!
