Preparing for the SAT is crucial if your child wants to ace the exam and fulfill their dreams of going to college. But chances are, no matter how prepared they are, they will inevitably run into some questions that they can not answer. While students used to get penalized for every answer they got wrong, on the newly redesigned SAT, they will only pay the price for leaving an answer blank. Removing penalties for the wrong answer, should lead to updated guessing strategies that test takers take on:Understand the true meaning of guessing: Some test-takers feel frustrated when they guess, thinking that they have surrendered. What they don’t realize is that there is also strategy when it comes to guessing. There are often several options that are obviously wrong and can be eliminated, so children should never feel defeated when they have to make an educated guess.Deal with time constraints: Time constraints can be one of the biggest challenges when it comes to taking the SAT. A good strategy in working against the clock is identifying the hardest questions as soon as possible and skipping them until later. As time winds down, read each question and follow your immediate instinct. Recognize chain questions: The redesigned SAT has a number of questions that, like a chain, build off one another. Correctly answering one of the questions in the chain is crucial in order to correctly answer the following questions. Recognizing these linked questions and answering the first question right is thus essential. If you must guess, guess on the latter questions.Develop a strategy for "lost cause" questions: When you cannot arrive at an answer, it is time to choose at – somewhat – random. It is worth your time to research why each potential answer is wrong and once you have eliminated these answers, pick one of the remaining options and move on.While it’s important that your child develop a good guessing strategy on the newly design SAT, it’s even more important that they come to the test prepared.
