Changes to the 2016 SAT

  The SAT has undergone its biggest change in 30 years. The new SAT test made its debut in March 2016, and impacts students in the class of 2017 or younger. The format redesign was based on the latest research on the skills colleges value most. The major difference in this new test format, is in how the concepts are tested and the steps students will have to take to solve problems correctly. If you’re unsure about exactly what the new SAT test has in store, we’re here to break it down for you:

• There is now no penalty for wrong answers. Students will want to answer every question on the SAT since there will no longer be a penalty for wrong answers.
• The essay portion is now optional. Many colleges will likely require that students complete the essay, but technically, it will be optional. If your child does opt to answer the essay, the types of essays they are asked to complete are different. Students will now read a passage and explain how an author builds an argument, with supporting documentation from the passage.
• Reading comprehension questions will now be a part of the test.
• Unfamiliar vocabulary words have been eliminated from the test, and students will only see words that they are more familiar with. However, they will have to know multiple meanings of these words.
• The math sections are going to focus on a more narrow range of topics: linear equations, ratios, percentages, and proportional reasoning, and functions or complex equations. These concepts are on the current SAT but on the new SAT they will be focused on more heavily.
