Encourage Your Child to Read Over Winter Break
Breaks from school typically result in breaks from reading. Taking time off from daily reading can affect your child in the classroom come back to school time. Building reading experiences into school breaks can make a giant difference when it comes to your child’s success in the classroom. Here are some ways to encourage reading over this holiday break:
Make a plan for reading over the holiday break: Ideally before break even begins, talk with your kids to agree on a reading plan. Determine when and where your kids can read each day. Creating a schedule is the best way to make sure they stick to it.
Give books as gifts: Giving your child a book for the holidays is one key to get them excited about diving into a new read. Let your kids be part of the book giving process, by allowing them to select books and help wrap them as gifts to other friends and family members.
Travel with books: Since holiday travel is so common, encourage your child to pack a book for the road. There are often long periods of down time when traveling, so having a book to distract from the long travel days can help promote a love of reading and will give your kids something to look forward to.
Encourage holiday-related writing experiences: Reading and writing often go hand-in-hand, so both will benefit if they can engage in some writing over the winter break as well. Ask your child to write thank you letters for holiday gifts, an essay on what they love most about this time of year or even a review of what they did over the break. Creating exercises like this will be educational and fun and your child won’t even realize they're doing work!
