Remember when you were in school and you had to study for a test? What were your favorite studying methods to prepare for the big exam? Did you use flashcards--or perhaps repeated the information over and over again until it became second nature? Everyone has different learning styles, and the same holds true for your children. If your children are struggling in school, they should first recognize what type of learner they are. Here’sa breakdown of the four different types of learners:Visual Learners: Prefer to see info and visualize the relationship between ideas.
What works for them: These types of learners work best with charts and graphs, where the presentation is highly visual.
Learning suggestions: Visual learners find it beneficial to use flashcards, copy what is on the board, take notes, make lists and color-code and highlight key information in their notebooks.
Auditory Learners: Prefer to hear info rather than reading it or seeing it visually.
What works for them: Auditory learners like to recite information outloud, or repeat the information from their instructor back to them.
Learning suggestions: These types of learners find it beneficial to record lectures and watch videos, participate in group discussions and repeat facts with their eyes closed.
Read/Write Learners: Prefer to learn by reading and writing the information.
What works for them: These types of learners find that interacting with text is more powerful for them than hearing or seeing images.
Learning suggestions: Read/Write learners find that taking quizzes, or using handouts to follow along during the presentation are the best ways to help them retain the information and learn.
Kinesthetics Learners: Prefer hands-on, experimental learning. They learn best by doing.
What works for them: Kinesthetic learners find that role-playing or engaging in exercises where they participate are best for helping them learn.
Learning suggestions: These types of learners find it beneficial to take lab classes, go on field trips and study with others.
