Ways To Help Teenagers Get More Sleep To Perform Better In School

We can all relate to a restless night full of tossing and turning with minimal sleep–only to wake up the next day to feel sluggish and unproductive. According to a recent study in the Journal of Adolescent Health, only about 8 percent of American teenagers get the sleep they need, affecting their performance in school. If your child is struggling in school due to sleep deprivation, here are some ways to help them get a good night’s rest.

Stay consistent:

Consistency is crucial in terms of building healthy sleep habits. It’s important for your teen to go to bed as close as possible to the same time every night, and get as close to eight hours of sleep as possible. Keeping this schedule on the weekends and days off is also important in order to keep them on a normal sleeping routine without making too many adjustments.

Limit screen time:

We can’t stress the importance of turning off all electronic devices a minimum of an hour before the time your child is trying to go to sleep. Electronic screens emit a glow called “blue light,” signaling the brain, and suppresses the production of melatonin and keeps kids from feeling tired. Set strict no-screen time rules before bed and help your child get some shut-eye.

Simplify their schedules:

Over scheduling activities throughout the day in an effort to build a college resume have pushed many teens beyond what they can reasonably accomplish in a day. Set realistic schedules for your kids, carving out substantial time for them to focus on their school work and get proper rest. Spreading them too thin with an array of sports and extracurricular activities will hurt their sleep schedule and productivity in the long run.

Only use the bed for sleep:

It’s easier to fall asleep and stay asleep if your child associates the bed with sleeping. It’s important for your child to work in another room or space and not taint their bedroom with doing work.
