FAQs: SAT Subject Tests
With the recent changes to the SAT, some students and families are wondering if SAT subject tests have changed as well. While those tests are staying the same, parents are feeling overwhelmed as to what tests are right for their child to take. We’re here to break it down for you:
What are SAT subject tests?
SAT Subject Tests are college admission exams on specific subjects. These are the only national admission tests where you choose the tests that best showcase your strengths and interests.
- There are 20 SAT Subject Tests in five general subject areas: English, history, languages, mathematics and science.
- Each Subject Test is an hour long. They are all multiple-choice and scored on a 200–800 scale.
- Subject Tests test your child on their knowledge of subjects on a high school level. The best way to prepare is to take the relevant courses in them.
Why should my child take these tests?
- Colleges May Require Subject Tests: If your child is applying to take specific courses or programs, some colleges may require these tests be taken.
- Stand Out in College Admissions: Even if colleges don’t require Subject Tests, they can be used to help admissions get a more complete picture of the applicants. It will give the colleges a chance to see your child’s strengths and to for them to showcase their interests.
- Fulfill Requirements or Get Credit: Certain colleges use Subject Tests to place students into the appropriate courses. Depending on their scores, they might be able to fulfill basic requirements or get credit for introductory-level courses.
How can my child prepare for the test?
Because the SAT Subject Tests are based on high school course work, the best way your child can prepare for them is by learning the material taught in the corresponding classes. If your child is having trouble in a particular subject, consider getting them a tutor. Club Z! Santa Monica’s proprietary Z! Tutor Match process ensures that we match the right tutor to your child every time!
