Back-to-School Checklist for Parents: Academic Success Edition

As the new school year approaches, parents everywhere are busy shopping for school supplies, organizing schedules, and preparing their children for a fresh start. While new backpacks and notebooks are important, one of the best ways to help your child succeed is by creating a plan for academic success before the first day of school.

Whether your child excelled last year or struggled in certain subjects, starting the school year with the right habits and support can make all the difference. This back-to-school checklist will help you set your student up for a confident, successful year—and show you when one-on-one tutoring and personalized learning can provide the extra boost they need.

    1. Establish A Consistent Routine Before School Starts

The transition from summer vacation to the school year can be challenging. A consistent routine helps students adjust more easily and feel prepared. A few weeks before school begins:

    • Set regular bedtimes and wake-up times.
    • Practice a morning routine.
    • Designate time each day for reading or educational activities.
    • Limit late-night screen time.

Children who begin the school year with healthy routines are often better able to focus, manage their time, and handle classroom expectations.

    1. Create a Dedicated Homework Space

Having a quiet, organized place to complete homework encourages concentration and reduces distractions. An effective homework area should include:

    • Good lighting
    • Comfortable seating
    • School supplies within reach
    • Minimal distractions from televisions, phones, or video games

Even if your home doesn’t have a dedicated office, a consistent study area helps build positive learning habits.

    1. Review Last Year’s Progress

Before diving into new material, take time to reflect on last year’s academic performance. Ask yourself:

    • Which subjects came easily?
    • Where did my child struggle?
    • Were there any comments from teachers that should be addressed?
    • Did homework become a source of frustration?

Identifying learning gaps early allows parents to provide academic support before small challenges become larger obstacles.

    1. Set Realistic Academic Goals

Rather than focusing only on grades, encourage goals that build lifelong learning habits. Examples include:

    • Reading 20 minutes every evening
    • Completing homework before dinner
    • Improving organization skills
    • Asking questions in class
    • Studying a little each day instead of cramming before tests

Celebrating progress—not perfection—helps children stay motivated throughout the school year.

    1. Organize School Materials

Organization is often overlooked, but it’s one of the strongest predictors of academic success. Help your child:

    • Label folders and notebooks by subject.
    • Use a planner or digital calendar.
    • Keep backpacks organized.
    • Develop a system for managing assignments.

Strong organizational habits reduce stress and help students stay on top of their responsibilities.

    1. Build Strong Reading Habits

Reading remains one of the best ways to improve vocabulary, comprehension, writing skills, and critical thinking. Encourage your child to:

    • Read books that match their interests.
    • Visit the local library regularly.
    • Read together as a family.
    • Discuss what they’re reading.

Even 20 minutes of daily reading can have a significant impact over the course of a school year.

    1. Communicate with Teachers Early

Building a positive relationship with your child’s teachers creates opportunities for collaboration throughout the year.

    Consider:

    • Attending back-to-school events.
    • Introducing yourself during open house night.
    • Asking about classroom expectations.
    • Finding out the best method of communication.

Open communication allows parents to address concerns before they become major academic issues.

    1. Watch for Early Warning Signs

Many parents wait until report cards arrive before seeking help, but academic struggles often begin weeks or even months earlier.

Signs your child may benefit from additional support include:

    • Difficulty completing homework
    • Declining quiz or test scores
    • Frustration with schoolwork
    • Avoiding reading or math assignments
    • Lack of confidence
    • Increased stress about school

Recognizing these signs early allows families to provide help before students fall behind.

    1. Consider the Benefits of Personalized Tutoring

Every child learns differently. Some students need extra time to master new concepts, while others simply benefit from individualized attention. This is where personalized learning becomes especially valuable.

Unlike a traditional classroom, where teachers must divide their attention among many students, one-on-one tutoring focuses entirely on your child’s unique learning style, pace, and academic goals.

    A personalized tutor can:

    • Reinforce classroom instruction
    • Fill learning gaps
    • Build confidence
    • Improve study habits
    • Prepare students for upcoming tests
    • Keep students challenged when they need enrichment

Because tutoring is tailored to each student, lessons can be adjusted as their needs evolve throughout the school year.

    1. Don’t Wait Until Grades Drop

One of the biggest misconceptions about tutoring is that it’s only for students who are failing. In reality, many families use tutoring proactively.

Starting tutoring early can help students:

    • Build confidence from the beginning
    • Stay ahead of challenging coursework
    • Develop effective study habits
    • Reduce school-related stress
    • Maintain strong grades throughout the year

Seeking after-school help before problems develop often leads to better long-term outcomes than waiting until report cards reveal declining performance.

No matter how you look at it, college is an expensive proposition these days. Both public and private colleges and universities have had to raise fees and tuition as costs have increased. As a result, college student debt has skyrocketed and many students end up with loan payments years, sometimes even decades, after graduation. But with some careful planning and creative thinking, there are lots of other ways to help pay for college and avoid being stuck with big loan payments after graduation. One final but important step in the college application process is to include an application for financial aid.

As parents, and grandparents for that matter, we consider it to be a bit of a rite of passage to tell our children just how easy they have it compared to what we went through at their age. File this under the “when I was your age, I had to walk 2 miles to school each day, uphill both ways” category.

For any parent of a college-bound student, SAT and ACT test scores are no doubt at the center of most dinner table discussions. While no one will argue that test scores alone are the deciding factor in college admissions, and many colleges are moving toward a test-optional admissions policy, strong scores on the SAT and or ACT can definitely help a student’s chance of gaining admission to his/her college of choice.
