A number x is said to have "n figures" if it takes n digits to express it. The number of figures is therefore equal to one more than the power of 10 in the scientific notation representation of the number. The word is most frequently used in reference to monetary amounts, e.g., a "six-figure salary" would fall in the range of $100000 to $999999.
