    Unitary Element

    Definition

    Let A be a unital C^*-algebra. An element u element A is called unitary if u^* u = u u^* = 1. For example, for each self-adjoint element a element A, the element u = exp(i a) = sum_(n = 0)^∞ (i a)^n/(n!) is unitary, but the converse is not true in general.
