Choosing the Right Tutor: A Bright New Beginning for Your Child

Too often, parents feel that choosing a tutor is a desperate measure or an I-can’t-deal-with-this-anymore move, when really this choice has the potential to be one of the most positive steps forward in your child’s education. By embracing the idea of getting your child the help he or she needs and carefully considering how to make tutoring as successful an endeavor as you possibly can, the entire experience may be transformed – for you and your child – from frustrating to rewarding. “Parents who commit time and resources to their child’s education will prepare the child for success in life,” explains our Club Z! Franchise Director Cari Diaz. This sentiment doesn’t merely apply to helping your child struggle through his math homework each night – it is just as important when choosing the right tutor. After all, finding just the right help for your struggling student could lead to a cascade of positive changes: more productive study skills, improved grades, higher test scores, more academic self-confidence, and an ability to reach her full potential, to name a few. All things that parents dream of! These changes won’t happen all at once, of course, and you’ll need to stay involved. Choosing the right tutor for your child, though, is an important first step in the right direction. So what should you consider when making your decision? Here are a few tips to stay on course: 1. Evaluate the needs of your child. Is your child organized or disorganized, shy or outgoing? Can he keep his concentration when attending a group tutoring class or will he be distracted? Understanding the personality traits of your child will help you as you identify the right tutoring situation. You may determine your child needs a more individualized tutoring approach in a place free from distractions, such as his home. “There are solutions available to help your child build confidence and make better grades in school,” says Cari Diaz. 2. Find the right tutor. The right tutor makes all the difference. Your goal is to find a professional tutor who is an expert in the subject area and whose personality and teaching style are a good match with your child’s personality and learning style. Conduct some research on potential tutoring solutions to make sure tutors will have the appropriate experience and credentials. Your chosen tutor must be prepared and qualified to teach your child the core subjects she needs. (If you choose to go with Club Z!, you’ll find that we offer a wide variety of highly-qualified tutors, so that you can find one who best meets your child’s personality, learning style and educational needs.) 3. Stay in touch and stay involved. Follow up the tutor. Once you are utilizing the tutor, stay in touch and inquire regularly about the behavior and progress the tutor is witnessing in your child. “In every learning process, a parent’s involvement is very important, as children need to know they care and need to receive encouragement throughout the process,” says Cari Diaz.

No matter how you look at it, college is an expensive proposition these days. Both public and private colleges and universities have had to raise fees and tuition as costs have increased. As a result, college student debt has skyrocketed and many students end up with loan payments years, sometimes even decades, after graduation. But with some careful planning and creative thinking, there are lots of other ways to help pay for college and avoid being stuck with big loan payments after graduation. One final but important step in the college application process is to include an application for financial aid.

As parents, and grandparents for that matter, we consider it to be a bit of a rite of passage to tell our children just how easy they have it compared to what we went through at their age. File this under the “when I was your age, I had to walk 2 miles to school each day, uphill both ways” category.

For any parent of a college-bound student, SAT and ACT test scores are no doubt at the center of most dinner table discussions. While no one will argue that test scores alone are the deciding factor in college admissions, and many colleges are moving toward a test-optional admissions policy, strong scores on the SAT and or ACT can definitely help a student’s chance of gaining admission to his/her college of choice.
