    Citadel Admission Requirements

If you wish to apply to the Citadel for undergraduate studies, the first step is to understand the admissions process, the most important elements of which include:

    • High School GPA
    • SAT or ACT scores
    • Application requirements

    About the Citadel

Founded in 1842, the Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, is a public institution situated near the Ashley River, which is only a 10-minute drive from downtown Charleston. Since it’s a military college, the codes and rules for students are stricter than what you’d expect from other schools. Throughout their four years of study, students must reside in on-campus dormitories. Understandably, more than 90% of the students are male.

More than 20 degree programs are offered to undergraduate students, who enroll as the South Carolina Corps of Cadets at the Citadel. Among these, the most popular major is business. Plus, over 20 degree programs are offered at the Citadel Graduate College.

While students have a myriad of different clubs and organizations to join, including various religious organizations and honor societies, there aren’t any sororities or fraternities. Student athletes can take part in dozens of varsity, club, and intramural sports. The Citadel Bulldogs sports teams play in the NCAA Division I Southern Conference. Students may join a football or basketball team, or even go for the varsity rifle team.

The alumni of Citadel include veterans of World War II, the Civil War, and many other wars and conflicts. When it comes to admissions, it’s a lightly selective college with around 81.1% acceptance rate. Let’s take a look at the detailed admission requirements for the Citadel:

    The Citadel GPA Requirements

Just because its acceptance rate is high doesn’t mean you can secure a place at the Citadel with any grades. The average high school GPA for admitted students was 3.53, indicating that applicants need very good grades in high school to get into Citadel Military College of South Carolina. Ultimately, B+ students are granted admission and attend the military college.

As long as your GPA hits the average, your chances of admission remain very high due to the high acceptance rate.

    The Citadel SAT Requirements

A good GPA, however, is not enough to get into the Citadel. You must submit a standardized test score to submit an application to the college. The average SAT score for admitted students was 1118, with the lower and upper percentile scores being 1020 and 1220, respectively. For maximum chances of getting accepted, aim for an above average score of 1220. Seeking SAT Tutoring should make that remarkably easier.

    The Citadel ACT Requirements

One disadvantage of SAT is that you often need to send all test scores achieved. If you choose to take the ACT instead, you possess full control over which tests you send to the college when applying. At the Citadel, the average ACT score for admitted students is 23, while the 25th and 75th percentile scores being 20 and 25. Aim to hit or exceed 25 to boost your chances of admission, even if it means seeking ACT tutoring.

How to Apply to the Citadel

You’ll need to apply to the Corps of Cadets via the Citadel’s online application following your junior year of high school. The admissions committee operates on a rolling admission basis and evaluates profiles as they’re completed. Once your application portfolio is complete, it typically takes ten to fifteen days for the admission officials to come up with a decision. The application requirements include:

    • Application fee of $40
    • Official high school transcript
    • Official SAT or ACT scores
    • Counselor recommendation`

    Wrapping Up

No matter how you look at it, college is an expensive proposition these days. Both public and private colleges and universities have had to raise fees and tuition as costs have increased. As a result, college student debt has skyrocketed and many students end up with loan payments years, sometimes even decades, after graduation. But with some careful planning and creative thinking, there are lots of other ways to help pay for college and avoid being stuck with big loan payments after graduation. One final but important step in the college application process is to include an application for financial aid.

As parents, and grandparents for that matter, we consider it to be a bit of a rite of passage to tell our children just how easy they have it compared to what we went through at their age. File this under the “when I was your age, I had to walk 2 miles to school each day, uphill both ways” category.

For any parent of a college-bound student, SAT and ACT test scores are no doubt at the center of most dinner table discussions. While no one will argue that test scores alone are the deciding factor in college admissions, and many colleges are moving toward a test-optional admissions policy, strong scores on the SAT and or ACT can definitely help a student’s chance of gaining admission to his/her college of choice.
