Virginia Tech Admission Requirements

If you aspire to become a leader and authority in your field of interest and make a notable difference to the industry, enrolling at a reputable college should give you a head start. Not only will you develop the foundational knowledge and expertise related to your field, but also develop a wide professional network to accelerate your professional career. This is exactly what you can expect by enrolling at Virginia Tech University.

But you’ll have to go through the admissions mission first. With an acceptance rate of 64.8%, the school is moderately selective. When preparing for your admission application, pay particular attention to the following requirements:

  • High school GPA requirements
  • Standardized score requirements, either SAT or ACT
  • Application requirements

Before we go into detailed requirements, let’s obtain some basic information about the university:

About Virginia Tech

Formerly known as the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Virginia Tech is a public land-grant research university that was established in 1872. While the university’s main campus is situated in Blacksburg, Virginia, it has six additional educational facilities around the state offering around 280 undergraduate and graduate programs, a research center in Dominican Republic, and a study-abroad site in Switzerland.

What started as a military technical institute is now a research powerhouse that encourages students to “invent the future”. It is now home to two university research centers and seven research institutes that provide research opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students.

With a campus size of 2,600 acres, the institution had a total undergraduate enrollment of 30,020 in fall 2020. Students have more than 600 organizations and clubs to join. Freshmen are required to reside on campus, which has impressive dining facilities.

Let’s now study Virginia Tech admission requirements:

Virginia Tech GPA Requirements

To secure a place in Virginia Tech, you’ll need to rank among the top of your high school class. This is explained by the average GPA for Virginia Tech’s admitted students that stands at 4.04. To exceed the average, not only will you need to score straight A’s in all classes but also take the more challenging IB or AP courses to demonstrate your competitiveness.

Virginia Tech SAT Requirements

If you choose to take the SAT, you’ll preferably need to be among the top 27 percent of SAT test takers to enter Virginia Tech. While the institute normally takes composite scores down to 1180, some students with 1070 are also accepted, considering they have something exceptional elsewhere in their application. Yet, we advise against taking any chances. To safely get accepted, we recommend seeking SAT tutoring and aim for a 1200 or above.

Virginia Tech ACT Requirements

Based on past admissions data, Virginia Tech usually accepts applicants with an ACT score of 25 or above. The average ACT score for admitted students is 28, with the upper and lower percentile scores being 25 and 31, respectively. To get accepted, try your best to score higher than the average. ACT tutoring is an effective way to accomplish that.

How to Apply to Virginia Tech

Applicants applying for the first-year must apply by November, 1 or December, 1 for early decisions, or by January, 15 for a regular decision. Domestic students must submit a Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR), while international applicants must submit their transcripts. Although Virginia Tech is test-optional for applicants, it’s strongly recommended that you submit your SAT or ACT score to make your application competitive.

No matter how you look at it, college is an expensive proposition these days. Both public and private colleges and universities have had to raise fees and tuition as costs have increased. As a result, college student debt has skyrocketed and many students end up with loan payments years, sometimes even decades, after graduation. But with some careful planning and creative thinking, there are lots of other ways to help pay for college and avoid being stuck with big loan payments after graduation. One final but important step in the college application process is to include an application for financial aid.

As parents, and grandparents for that matter, we consider it to be a bit of a rite of passage to tell our children just how easy they have it compared to what we went through at their age. File this under the “when I was your age, I had to walk 2 miles to school each day, uphill both ways” category.

For any parent of a college-bound student, SAT and ACT test scores are no doubt at the center of most dinner table discussions. While no one will argue that test scores alone are the deciding factor in college admissions, and many colleges are moving toward a test-optional admissions policy, strong scores on the SAT and or ACT can definitely help a student’s chance of gaining admission to his/her college of choice.
